Good to know about Rockport
- Water source. Rockport Water is a groundwater system drawing on six city wells, per its 2026 report covering 2025. The report does not give a hardness value, so check with City Hall (812-649-2242). Source
- Lead results and 2025 violations. In Rockport's 2022-2025 lead and copper sampling, the 90th-percentile lead level was 1.31 ppb (action level 15 ppb) with no sites over the action level; the same report lists May 2025 violations for failing to maintain microbial (chlorine) treatment and related monitoring. - Lead service line replacement. Rockport's initial service-line inventory found lead, galvanized lines requiring replacement and unknown lines; the city plans to replace service lines on both the public and private side, plus aging water meters, in a project estimated at about $2,060,000. Source
- Aging water plant. Rockport's water treatment plant has been in operation for over 70 years and has met its useful life; a FY2027 federal funding request seeks $2,000,000 toward a new plant, storage tank rehabilitation, new water mains, hydrants and valves. Source
- Sewer backups. The City of Rockport Sewer Department says slow or no drainage in showers, tubs, sinks or washers may mean a clogged sewer main or a clogged property-owner lateral, and asks residents to call City Hall (812-649-2242) right away. Source
- National Register historic district. The Rockport Historic District, roughly bounded by First, Seminary, Greenwood, Lincoln Avenue, Eighth, William and Pearl streets, is on the National Register of Historic Places with a period of significance of 1830-1961. Source
