What will this repair cost?

Pick a repair to see the published price range, an estimate for your job, and what pushes the price up or down. Every number names its source. An estimate, never a quote.

Cost ranges are estimates based on the published sources named under each result. They are not quotes or offers. Actual prices are set by the independent provider you hire and depend on your home and the work needed. NeighborFix Guide is a free referral service and does not perform or price any work.

About this tool

Pick a job to see what published cost guides say it usually costs, then tap the things that apply to yours and watch the estimate move. It is a range to check quotes against, not a quote.

How it works

The ranges

Every range comes from a published cost guide, and the source, link and date retrieved sit under each result. When several guides publish a range for the same job, all of them are drawn as bars on the same scale, and the estimate uses the first one listed. If we can’t source a price, it isn’t shown. Most guides publish national figures, which can differ from prices here.

Your estimate

  • Job size: a small job sits in the lower half of the published range, a typical job in the middle half (25% to 75% of the way from low to high), and a big job in the upper half.
  • What pushes it up or down: the factors are the ones the cost guide itself names for that job, such as a weekend call or an electric furnace. Each one you tap moves the estimate an eighth of the published range up or down, and it never leaves the range. The guides don’t say how much each factor matters; that eighth is our rule of thumb.
  • Extras: some jobs have add-ons the guide prices separately, like an emergency call-out fee ($100 to $300 for a burst pipe, per HomeAdvisor). Their low and high are added to the estimate.
  • Rounding: to the nearest $10 under $1,000, $50 under $5,000, and $100 above that.

Local labor

For plumbing, heating and pest control jobs, the calculator compares the average hourly wage in that trade in the Evansville metro area with the national average, using the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics. In May 2025, Evansville-area plumbers averaged $34.59 an hour against $34.70 nationwide, heating and cooling technicians $29.95 against $31.14, and pest control workers $21.18 against $22.31.

The optional “adjust for local labor” toggle scales the labor part of the estimate by that gap. Where the cost guide says how much of the bill is labor (about 80% for a burst pipe and about half for a water heater replacement, per HomeAdvisor), only that share moves. Where it doesn’t, the whole estimate moves, which overstates the effect. Wages aren’t prices, so treat it as context.
